MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Moscow is prepared to provide Washington information on its military cooperation with Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Thursday.
“We are open to this type of mutual action, we’re ready at any time the Americans show their desire to discuss our military and technical cooperation with Syria, not during a briefing or press conference, but between specialists…we’re open to this type of dialogue,” Zakharova said during a press briefing in Moscow.
Syria has been mired in civil war since 2011, with Assad’s government fighting against many opposition factions and extremist groups, including ISIL and al-Nusra. Russia, unlike many Western countries, considers Assad to be the legitimate authority in Syria, and has provided humanitarian aid and military equipment to the country.
Media reports fueling speculation about a Russian military buildup in Syria have been consistently dismissed by Moscow and Damascus.
