WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The European Union is experiencing a rapidly escalating migrant crisis, as hundreds of thousands of people flee the Middle East, North and Sub-Saharan Africa, seeking refuge in wealthier EU states such as Germany.
"The Secretary has added a stop onto his trip to Europe this weekend," Kirby said. "He will go to Berlin on September 20 to meet with German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier. They will discuss a range of bilateral and global issues, including of course refugee and migration issues in Europe."
The State Department announced earlier that Kerry was travelling to London from September 18 — 20 to meet with United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond. Kerry was said would discuss various issues, including the ongoing crisis in Syria and the refugee situation in Europe. He would also meet with United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed there.
Earlier in September, German Vice Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel said that as many as a million refugees are likely to come to the country by the end of 2015.
