WASHINGTON, (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — This week, Russia acknowledged that they had flown military cargo flights into Syria to help the government of President Bashar Assad combat ISIL.
"If you have two militaries that are going to operate in the same space…. unless they are going to be fighting each other, they would want to find ways of deconflicting," Weinrod said on Thursday.
Unintended military contact can be worked out at the military level, Weinrod said.
"All relevant parties would just sit around a table and say ‘how can we figure out to have some kind of awareness in a way that would prevent military incidents’," he explained.
At present, the United States, France, Turkey and Syria have ongoing military operations in the Syrian battlespace.
Despite the lack of formal military-to-military contact between the United States and Russia, Weinrod noted that the two countries could convene a group of "working level" military personnel to deal with the Syrian battlespace as a "specific issue, not broad issues of military policy and strategy."
US Undersecretary of Defense for Policy, Christine Wormuth told Sputnik on Wednesday that the United States was not yet reached at the point of reopening official military-to-military discussions with Russia.
