The US talk of deconflicting in Syria to avoid inadvertent military incidents between the United States and Russia could be carried out in working level military-to-military discussions, former US Defense Advisor to NATO Bruce Weinrod told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON, (Sputnik), Leandra Bernstein — This week, Russia acknowledged that they had flown military cargo flights into Syria to help the government of President Bashar Assad combat ISIL.

"If you have two militaries that are going to operate in the same space…. unless they are going to be fighting each other, they would want to find ways of deconflicting," Weinrod said on Thursday.

Unintended military contact can be worked out at the military level, Weinrod said.

"All relevant parties would just sit around a table and say ‘how can we figure out to have some kind of awareness in a way that would prevent military incidents’," he explained.

US Military Fails to Track Volunteers Trained to Fight Islamists in Syria
The United States has raised concerns about a Russian presence in Syria. On Wednesday, Pentagon officials raised the possibility of setting up a "deconfliction mechanism" in the event Russian and US military operations will be occurring in the same area.

At present, the United States, France, Turkey and Syria have ongoing military operations in the Syrian battlespace.

Despite the lack of formal military-to-military contact between the United States and Russia, Weinrod noted that the two countries could convene a group of "working level" military personnel to deal with the Syrian battlespace as a "specific issue, not broad issues of military policy and strategy."
