US Congressman Mike McCaul introduced legislation on Friday to give Congress the authority to block President Barack Obama’s proposed resettlement of up to 10,000 Syrian refugees in the United States.

WASHINGTON, (Sputnik) — The new bill would allow Congress to "block any inadequate refugee resettlement plan put forward by the President," the release stated.

"This bill will rein in the [Obama] administration’s refugee resettlement plans and give Congress more control over the process," McCaul, who chairs the House Homeland Security Committee said in a press release.

On September 10, President Obama announced that the United States would open its doors to resettle up to 10,000 refugees who are fleeing war-torn Syria.

Since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011, the United States has settled fewer than 1,500 refugees, according to the International Rescue Committee, a non-profit charity organization.

Over the past year, Europe has been overwhelmed with a flood of more than 380,000 Syrian refugees, according to the United Nations. However, numerous EU member states, including Hungary and Croatia, have closed their borders to refugees.

The new law would require the US President to submit a quota of refugees to the Congress for approval at the beginning of every fiscal year.

McCaul explained the refugee cap was "necessary for not only the security of the United States, but for the safety of the refugees."

The United Nations estimates that there are currently more than four million Syrian refugees.
