MOSCOW (Sputnik) — According to the Index news portal, at least 23 buses with about 1,700 migrants arrived in the border area, accompanied by the Croatian policemen.
Earlier, Croatian officials said that their country ran out of capacity to accept any more migrants and police closed borders with Serbia to control the flow of refugees.
Thousands of migrants from crisis-torn countries of North Africa and the Middle East used to come to Serbia to use it as a transit country on their way to Hungary and further to wealthier EU states within the Schengen area.
The closure of the Serbian-Hungarian border and the penalties introduced on Tuesday by the Hungarian government for border infringements have forced thousands of migrants from Serbia to reroute through Croatia and Slovenia, in their journey to the European Union.
On Thursday, Hungary started the construction of the fence on the border with Croatia to protect itself from migrants from this country after the similar fence was constructed on the border with Serbia.
