Gregor Gysi, a key politician of the German Die Linke party, on Friday called on the Greek people to join him in political struggle against incumbent German government by supporting Alexis Tsipras, the leader of Greek Syriza party.

ATHENS (Sputnik) — Gysi along with other leaders of European left-wing parties joined Tsipras on stage during his pre-election address in the Greek capital of Athens.

“I ask you not to leave me alone in my struggle,” Gysi said to the Greeks after he received a negative answer on his question if the participants of the rally supported the policy of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble.

In his speech, Gysi also criticized the governments of the Eurozone members and said that Tsipras’s government before his resignation was the only not neo-liberal one within the zone.

A snap election in the Greek parliament is scheduled for September 20, with opinion polls saying Syriza is tied with a key rival, New Democracy, a conservative party. Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras resigned in August and called for snap elections to gain support for controversial austerity reforms he backed to keep the country in the Eurozone.
