WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Ambassador Thomas Shannon, a career member of the US Foreign Service, and current Counselor of the Department of State, was nominated by President Barack Obama on Friday to take over Sherman’s post at the State Department when she departs on October 2.
On Friday, Secretary of State John Kerry acknowledged Sherman’s "tremendous legacy" in helping to secure the Iran nuclear deal, and stated that he looks forward to working with the new appointee, Thomas Shannon.
In May, Sherman announced she would be stepping down from her position after spending more than two years of intense nuclear nonproliferation talks with Iran.
