MOSCOW (Sputnik) — German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier approves Russian and US readiness to cooperate in finding solution to the Syrian conflict, he said in an interview published Saturday.
"I welcome the fact that Washington and Moscow intend to talk about the situation in Syria not against one another but again with each other, and that they also want to discuss military issues," Steinmeier told the German Bild am Sonntag newspaper.
On Friday, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter agreed in a phone conversation to resume Russia-US military contacts and to continue discussions to ensure peaceful resolution to the Syrian crisis.
Syria has been in a civil war since 2011. The country’s government is fighting a number of opposition forces, as well as radical Islamist militant organizations, including the Nusra Front and the Islamic State jihadist group.
