MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a congratulatory telegram to Greece’s Syriza leader Alexis Tsipras in winning parliamentary elections, the Kremlin said Monday.
“The head of the Russian state expressed his hope for the continuation of constructive dialogue and active joint work in the further strengthening of mutually beneficial Russian-Greek cooperation in various fields, including in trade, economy, energy, and humanitarian areas,” the Kremlin said in a statement.
The left-wing Greek Syriza party won snap elections held on Sunday with 35.46 percent of support after over 99.5 percent of the votes were counted.
Tsipras is due to be sworn in as prime minister on Monday afternoon. He will then appoint a cabinet which will be sworn in Tuesday.
The Syriza leader is expected to continue fostering close relations with Russia. In June, he traveled to Moscow as part of his personal approach to a multidimensional foreign policy.
