BRUSSELS (Sputnik) – On Sunday, the left-wing Greek Syriza party won snap elections with 35.46 percent of support after over 99.9 percent of the votes counted.
"On behalf of the European Council, I wish to congratulate you on winning the elections in Greece. I hope that the elections will now provide for the political stability necessary to face all the challenges at hand," Tusk wrote in a congratulatory telegram.
Tusk added that the European Union and Greece were facing similar challenges, such as a massive refugee crisis and the creation of sustainable growth and jobs.
According to Tusk, implementing the austerity reforms that were backed by Tsipras in July as an exchange for additional financial assistance from Greece’s international creditors is crucial for the recovery of the Greek economy.
