MADRID (Sputnik) — The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) might win the Spanish national elections in December with a slight margin over its nearest rival, the ruling People’s Party (PP), the results of a new survey, published on Monday, showed.
According to the results of the poll conducted by the Metroscopia polling institute and published in the local El Pais newspaper, public support for PSOE is at 24.6 percent, while support for the ruling center-right People’s Party is at 23.4 percent.
The left-wing Podemos party is supported by 18.6 percent of respondents and Citizens by 16.1 percent, according to the poll.
Previous poll results, conducted by the CELESTE-TEL sociological research institute in August, showed that the People’s Party of Spain was leading in terms of public support with over 30 percent of voting preferences.
During the last parliamentary elections, held in Spain in 2011, the People’s Party received the support of over 42 percent of the electorate and obtained 186 seats in Parliament, which constituted an absolute majority.
According to the Metroscopia poll results, this time a coalition may be necessary to form a government.
