WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States is prepared to work with Greece’s newly re-elected government, including on its efforts to bring about economic recovery, a State Department official told Sputnik on Monday.
"We congratulate Syriza on its victory in yesterday’s election, and we look forward to working with the new government," the State Department official stated. "As the new government begins its work, the United States will continue to support domestic reforms and international efforts to foster Greece’s economic recovery."
The official explained that the US interest "has been, and remains, that Greece emerge from its prolonged economic crisis stronger and playing a stabilizing role in the region."
The official also underlined that Greece is an important US ally, and Washington will continue to work closely with its government on bilateral and regional issues.
Syriza defeated its main rival, the conservative New Democracy, in the country’s parliamentary elections after seeking a renewed mandate for its austerity policies as part of a deal with international money lenders.
Syriza has confirmed the formation of a coalition with former political partner, the Independent Greeks party (ANEL).
