MOSCOW (Sputnik), Alexander Mosesov — The US refugees resettlement policy is generous, however, fighting the cause of the migrant crisis is more important, a representative of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) public policy interest group told Sputnik.
On Sunday, US Secretary of State John Kerry said the country is planning to increase the number of refugees from the Middle East it will take in over the next two years by 15,000, bringing the total number of refugees to be admitted to 100,000 by 2017.
"The problem with the large scale resettlement of Syrians in the West is that it does not address any of the causes of the crisis that have created the migrant situation," Ira Mehlman, FAIR's media director said, adding that the United States "accepts and resettles many more refugees from other parts of the world."
Mehlman also said that in comparison to Germany, the United States is planning to welcome much fewer refugees.
"Compared to wealthy nations in the region, however, the American resettlement plan is extremely generous," she noted.
Over the latest months, hundreds of thousands of refugees from Syria and other Middle Eastern countries have poured into Europe, seeking primarily to settle in the more prosperous EU member states.
FAIR was founded in 1979 and boasts 250,000 members and supporters in the United States. With headquarters in Washington, DC, the organization advocates for US immigration policy changes.
