On Monday, local media reported that the families of the victims of Ukrainian nationalists intend to appeal to Duda with a request to strip Poroshenko of the Order of the White Eagle, awarded to him by former Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski.
The move was motivated by the current Ukrainian authorities perceived glorification the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) and the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), organizations guilty of committing genocide against Poles and Polish citizens of other nationalities.
"It will be sort of a test for President Duda," Marek Poznanski said.
However, Poznanski added that Duda is unlikely to bring up the historical background to relations between Poland and Ukraine as he "lacks political courage."
Before, during and after the Second World War, the OUN and its militant wing the UPA, which collaborated with the Nazis, carried out a number of massacres and ethnic cleansing of Poles, Jews and Russians. Up to 100,000 Poles were killed by the Ukrainian nationalists.
The disciples of the UPA — the ultranationalist Right Sector group — played an active role in the anti-government protests in Ukraine that led to the ousting of then President Viktor Yanukovych in February 2014.
