Russia does not discuss the future of Syria with other states, as the country’s future must be decided by the Syrian people, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier, Western media reports suggested that Moscow and Washington had discussions on a possible change of power in Syria, including the resignation of current Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"Russia does not discuss the fate of Syria with anyone. It is the Syrian nation that discusses the fate of Syria and makes a relevant decision [regarding it]," Peskov said.

Russian officials have repeatedly said that only Syrians can choose the political future of their country.

Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011 as Syrian government forces fight opposition factions and extremist groups, including Islamic State and the Nusra Front.

Moscow believes Assad must be included in negotiations for a political solution to the ongoing civil war, while Western nations, including the United States, have called for him to step down.
