MOSCOW (Sputnik) — A Toronto court sentenced on Wednesday two men on terrorism charges for plotting to derail a Canadian passenger train, local media reported.
Raed Jaser, permanent Canadian resident of Palestinian descent, and Tunisian national Chiheb Esseghaier, were sentenced for plotting to derail in 2013 a Via passenger train heading from New York to Toronto.
Both men have a possibility to parole, but before that, they must serve at least 10 years in prison, according to local broadcaster CBC.
According to the other media reports, the most important evidence in the case was some 25 hours of secretly recorded talks between the two men and an undercover FBI agent. The agent posed as a radicalised Egyptian-American real estate developer who was getting ready to join the two in the train terror plot.
Over a recent decade, an increased number of terror attacks has been registered in Canada. Earlier this year, Canada fortified its anti-terror measures and issued the Anti-terrorism Act, allowing the authorities to share information about individuals easily and expanding the mandate of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) in order to disable terrorists from using Canada as a recruiting ground, and prevent planned attacks on its soil.
