Berlin has stated repeatedly that it only sees political means to settling the Syrian conflict, which it considers to be the root cause of the European migration crisis.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated earlier that any political dialogue on Syria must include Russia.

The Syrian civil war is entering its fifth year and has claimed the lives of up to 330,000 people, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights’ August 2015 estimates.

Syrian government forces are fighting rebel factions and extremist militant groups, including Islamic State and the al-Qaeda affiliated Nusra Front.
