PRAGUE (Sputnik) – Slovakia will build a fence on its southern border with Hungary using the military technology the United States had employed in Iraq and Afghanistan, Slovak Interior Minister Robert Kalinak said Wednesday.
"Not one refugee would be able to come here, I guarantee you," Kalinak was quoted as saying by the Slovak Pluska web portal.
The online news outlet cited Kalinak as saying the ministry plans to use the United Kingdom’s Hesco Bastion company’s eponymous military fortification barrier.
The fortifications’ advantage lies with their low cost and fast deployment, and the Hescos are also used as levees to protect against flooding.
Slovakia shares a 420-mile border with Hungary, which nears completion of its own border fence on its southern frontier with Serbia. Hungary has also begun construction of fences on its Croatian and Romanian borders.
Authorities estimate nearly a quarter million migrants have crossed into Hungary this year, most of whom Budapest believes are economic migrants as opposed to asylum seekers.
Slovak, Czech, Hungarian and Romanian interior and justice ministers voted on Tuesday against the European Commission’s proposal to resettle 120,000 refugees throughout the European Union. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico announced on Wednesday his government will not adhere to the new quota system and will appeal the decision in court.
