Readers of major German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung are unhappy about Western position towards Russia in the context of the Syrian crisis and its possible solutions.
"Supporters of Syrian President Bashar Assad view Russian leader Vladimir Putin as a savior in the Syrian civil war. The West has taken the opposite position toward Putin. Not every SZ’s reader likes it," the newspaper wrote citing the opinions of several German residents.
What is the sense of the coalition against the Islamic State if its militants were able to seize such a big city like Mosul, Fisher asks.
"Instead of working together with Putin, the coalition is solving an entertaining task of how to explain to the astonished public that ISIL has not yet been destroyed, although (supposedly) 30 percent of the planet is fighting against it,” Fisher argues.
Rüdiger Berger from the city of Neubiberg also criticized one of the newspaper’s articles, in which Vladimir Putin and Bashar al-Assad are depicted as "unpredictable" politicians. From Berger's standpoint the presidents of both countries play a major role in security issues. The US government in turn seeks to eliminate Assad, make Syria its vassal and get rid of the latest Russian base in the Mediterranean, Berger claims.
The result of this proxy war will be the destruction of Syria, the consequences of which Europeans will have to deal with, Berger argues.
Several other comments also critisized the US' stance toward resolving the crisis. However, some of them criticize Russia as well. For instance, Edeltraud Gebert from Groebenzell is sure that the destabilization of Europe is advantageous not for the US, but for Vladimir Putin. That is why, Hebert says, the Russian president is not interested in the resolution of the Syrian war.
