MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Moscow will not oppose the sale of two French-made Mistral-class helicopter carriers to Egypt as the new deal respects Russian interests, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday.
"The deal is taking place, which means that it respects Russia's interests," Peskov told reporters in Moscow.
"We have reached such an understanding," the spokesman said, adding that it was one of the conditions for the future transfers of the warships by France after Moscow and Paris officially terminated their 1.2 billion euro deal in August.
France and Russia terminated a $1.3-billion contract last month following Hollande’s suspension of the warships’ deliveries late last year over the Ukrainian conflict.
Paris repaid Moscow around $1 billion as compensation for the breached contract.
