ATHENS, (Sputnik) — Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and US President Barack Obama discussed the Greek economy and the migrant influx in the country in a phone talk on Thursday, the prime minister’s press service said in a statement.
Obama congratulated Tsipras on winning the last week’s parliamentary election, according to the statement.
“The situation with the influx of refugees was discussed during the conversation, among other things. The US president also expressed hope for the stabilization of the Greek economy and for its return to growth,” the statement read.
Earlier in the week, Tsipras’ Syriza’s press service said the prime minister was expected to meet Obama on the sidelines of the ongoing annual United Nations summit. The White House has not yet confirmed the meeting.
