WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US President Barack Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron discussed in a phone call ways to ease the ongoing refugee crisis as well as the situation in Syria, the White House said in a statement on Thursday.

"President Obama spoke today by phone with Prime Minister David Cameron of the United Kingdom to discuss a range of foreign policy and national security issues, including the global refugee crisis and the situation in Syria," the White House said.

The leaders also stressed their commitment to reaching a "negotiated political transition to end the conflict in Syria" and defeating Islamic State terrorists.

Obama and Cameron also agreed that the international community should be more focused on the issue of climate change, and that "support for an ambitious agreement" would be necessary for the upcoming UN Climate Conference in November 2015.
