US Government Shutdown to Jeopardize National Security, Economy
WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The United States must consider legislation to ensure federal workers are compensated financially in case government shutdowns occur, the National Treasury Employees Union (NTEU) National President Tony Reardon told Sputnik.

"NTEU is working to increase congressional support for legislation that will guarantee retroactive pay for… federal employees in the event of a shutdown," Reardon said.

"[The legislation] would allow employees… to continue to be able to take leave. The bill would also ensure that employees are paid as soon as possible after a shutdown."

Reardon said he expects similar legislation that NTEU is pushing in the US Senate also to be introduced in the House of Representatives.

"And we are calling on OMB [Office of Management and Budget] to release agency shutdown plans as soon as possible so federal employees can be prepared," Reardon said.

On September 15, US Congressman Jim Moran said in an interview with a media outlet that federal employees should begin preparing for another US federal government shutdown next month.

During the last 2013 government shutdown, more than 10,000 stop-work directives were given out, according to a White House Budget Office report.

The Obama administration’s contingency plans in case of a US federal government shutdown have yet to be made public.
