MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia will provide adequate support to Syria's government to help it fight terrorism, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Department for New Challenges and Threats Ilya Rogachev told RIA Novosti Thursday.
"Russia has provided and will provide adequate support to the legitimate government of Syria in the fight against extremists and terrorists of all kinds."
“I think that issues of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism will take a vivid place in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech at the 70th session of the UN General Assembly,” he added.
The official waved off allegations made by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin that Russia was training ISIL militants, saying that the latter's statement shows his lack of common sense.
"This falls into Kiev’s currently popular ‘doctrine’ that wherever something bad is happening, it’s Russia’s fault."
Syria has been mired in a civil war since 2011. The country’s government is fighting against a number of opposition forces, as well as radical Islamist militant organizations, such as ISIL and al-Qaeda affiliated Nusra Front.
Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier acknowledged providing equipment, weaponry and training for the regular Syrian army in its fight against terrorists.
