Fifteen years of reconciliation has not helped former Yugoslav countries to maintain friendly ties amid the refugee crisis. The increasing inflow of asylum seekers from Syria to Europe has been the last straw in their tenuous relations.

The refugee crisis is having an extremely negative impact on all of Europe, especially affecting the Balkan states, whose relations remain highly fragile even after years of reconciliation.

For instance, Serbia and Croatia have started insulting each other and threatening to introduce sanctions and trade embargos.

Croatia Urges Serbia to Stop Sending Refugees, Redirect Them to Hungary
While Croatian authorities say they cannot cope with the uncontrollable surge of refugees and call for Serbia to stop sending migrants across their common border, Serbia is accusing Croatia of racist policies and discrimination.

"In their discriminatory character, they can only be compared with measures taken in the past, during the fascist Independent Croatia,” the Serbian ministry said in a statement, cited by Reuters.

The statement was made after Serbian citizens were denied entry at the Croatian border for unknown reasons. Croatian officials explained the incident by a mistake in the computer system.

The situation is likely to deteriorate as Hungary is close to completing the construction of a fence along its border with both of its neighbors to keep all refugees out. Nearly 50,000 refugees have crossed the Croatian border via Serbia in a little over a week after Hungary barred its border with Serbia with a metal fence.
