NEW YORK (Sputnik) — A former New York City correction officer was indicted on criminal charges for allegedly refusing to administer medical care to a dying inmate, the Bronx District Attorney’s office said in a statement on Friday.
"Former Rikers Island Correction Officer Wickenson DeMaitre [was indicted] on charges related to the death of inmate Victor Woods," the statement read.
According to prosecutors, DeMaitre failed to act while he was at his post at Rikers’ Island jail when 53-year-old Woods began having a seizure on the night of October 1, 2014.
"DeMaitre claimed he notified the medical response team when video showed he took no action," the District Attorney’s office said. "In fact, it was other inmates who brought the matter to the other officer’s attention."
Woods, who was detained on drug related charges, died despite efforts to revive him.
