US news — and the social media that carries it — has been all about Pope Francis these days, in light of the pontiff's historic visit to the US. Several of Hollywood's finest have expressed their admiration of Catholicism's biggest star in recent days, so when reality TV's diva-we-all-love-to-hate Kim Kardashian voiced what she intended to be an endorsement of His Holiness via Twitter, few could have guessed that tweet would spark outrage six thousand miles south of Los Angeles.
It all started, as it so often does, with a tweet:
The pope is dope
— Kim Kardashian West (@KimKardashian) September 24, 2015
Indeed, the hashtags #popeisdope, #catholicswag and #rockstarpope have been trending throughout Pope Francis' US tour.
But then, there was drama.
A reporter at Primicias Ya hastily responded with an infuriated piece entitled "Did Kim Kardashian Attack the Pope?", mistranslating Kardashian's tweet as "THE POPE IS DRUGS."

"What could Kim be referring to?" the piece questions. "Without a doubt, this couldn't be positive. How do you interpret her message?"
One of the commenters, perhaps less gently, suggested that Primicias Ya should better "inform themselves before creating controversy."
Kardashian's message about the Pope has been retweeted more than 12,000 times.
