WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The House speaker’s resignation follows "extreme pressure" over a bill to avoid a government shutdown which largely weighed on whether or not to defund women’s health provider Planned Parenthood, the New York Times reported.
In August, US Congressman Mark Meadows filed a motion to vote on ousting Boehner from his leadership position. The lawmaker accused the speaker of using his legislative calendar to create a "crisis for the American people."
Boehner, who has served as Ohio’s Representative for 12 terms, has led the US House of Representatives since the Republican party took control after the November 2014 midterm elections.
