MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Volkswagen admitted earlier this week that 11 million diesel engine cars it sold globally emitted 20 times more greenhouse gas than showed in official standards testing.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) will assess the level of emissions in VW diesel engine cars and seek clarification from the car-maker, the Mint newspaper said.
"We want to know that what happened in the US could happen in India or not," the outlet cited government officials as saying. "In case VW uses the same software here in India, government wants Arai to ascertain whether their cars are meeting emission norms here."
Similar investigations have been launched across the European Union, in Canada and in South Korea, with Australia saying it is closely monitoring the situation.
