BERLIN (Sputnik) — Germany does not keep official statistics on refugee nationality, the spokesperson said at a briefing.
"The assessment is based on observations of local officials, primarily the federal police, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees and the [EU border agency] Frontex," he said.
The European Union, and particularly Germany, is trying to cope with a massive refugee crisis as hundreds of thousands of people flee conflict-torn regions, seeking asylum in the bloc.
Earlier in September, local police said that about 83,000 undocumented immigrants had arrived to Germany through the Austrian territory in the first half of the month.
Over 500,000 migrants and refugees have arrived in the European Union since the beginning of 2015, according to the European Commission.
