Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister of Greece Alexis Tsipras confirmed in a telephone conversation their mutual interest in enhancing bilateral cooperation, including in the energy sector, the Kremlin press service said on Friday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Earlier in the day, the two leaders held a phone conversation, the first since Tsipras' return to power following a parliamentary election last week.

"Vladimir Putin and Alexis Tsipras praised Russian-Greek collaboration and confirmed their interest in further enhancing cooperation in all areas, including the energy sector," the Kremlin said in a statement.

The leaders of Russia and Greece agreed to continue to make contact with each other, according to the statement.

Putin also congratulated Tsipras, whose left-wing Syriza party had won the snap elections held in Greece on Sunday, on his political victory.

Earlier this week, the Russian leader sent a congratulatory telegram to Tsipras to this end.
