Russian energy giant Gazprom chief executive Alexei Miller said he did not rule out emergence of possible problems with gas transit to Europe during the winter season as Kiev is set to buy only two billion cubic meters of gas under initialled protocol that would be insufficient in case of a cold winter.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — It is necessary for Kiev to purchase from five to seven billion cubic meters of gas to normally pass the autumn-winter period, Miller said. However, it is still unclear whether Ukraine is able to buy five billions more cubic meters of gas, he added.

"Today, we fix that Ukraine, nevertheless, got the money — $500 million, and beginning with October Ukraine will start receiving Russian gas… However, two billion cubic meters do not solve the problem… Therefore, if the winter is unusually cold, one can still expect problems," Miller said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television.

Russia, Ukraine Agree on Winter Gas Supplies
The European Commission will finance Ukraine’s natural gas purchases from Russia for current consumption in the coming winter months, according to Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak.

Meanwhile, Novak said that possible new sanctions by Kiev will not have any impact on the commercial gas contract between Gazprom and Ukraine's Naftogaz.

"I think, there is a small chance that commercial organizations will introduce any changes [to the contract]. This is a delicate issue," Novak said.

The price of Russian gas for Ukraine in the fourth quarter of 2015 will be around $230, given a discount, Novak added.
