BARCELONA(Sputnik) — The Spanish government has problems not only with Catalonia but with the Basque autonomous community as well, President of the Basque Government Inigo Urkullu said Sunday.
Catalonia is currently holding regional elections, aimed at beginning the process of Catalan secession from Spain in case of the independence coalition victory.
Urkullu said he was sorry that Madrid sees Catalan election as a problem, adding that "they [the Spanish government] have a problem in Catalonia and they have a problem in the Basque Country."
The Basque leaders also called for a "legitimate and coherent" referendum on the future of the Basque people.
In 2008, the Spain's Supreme Court prevented Basques from holding a consultative referendum on independence.
Barcelona has long sought independence, accusing Madrid of constraining its economic and cultural autonomy and of unfairly distributing resources. Spain has repeatedly rejected Catalans' the right to secede.
