UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The permanent members of the United Nations Security Council are unlikely to ever vote for an amendment that would strip them of their veto rights, Russian envoy to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said Sunday.
"This is a populist idea, there will be an hour-long meeting. They want to release some document, which some may join. We will simply not join," Churkin said on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, commenting on a French proposal on voluntarily limiting UNSC veto rights.
"I am absolutely certain that neither the Americans, nor the Chinese will join," he said, adding that "even if the Americans would join, the Congress would immediately call for impeachment for this irresponsible attitude toward such an important instrument in US policy and diplomacy as the veto right."
