UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — China will never pursue hegemony or expansion, no matter how strong the country becomes, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said Monday.

"China will continue go down the path of building peace in the world, we are strongly committed to peaceful development, irrespective of the future evolution of the international landscape, no matter how strong China may become. We will never pursue hegemony, expansion or planting spheres of influence," Xi said at the UN General Assembly.

"'The law of the jungle' shows that the weak are under the power of the strong. Countries cannot interact like this. Those who arrogantly use force, are actually raising the stone that will eventually fall on their feet," Xi added.

Xi also stressed that all countries must reject the Cold War mentality.
