WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Al-Thani stated that the only reason a solution to the Syrian conflict has not been achieved is because other countries may not have sought to resolve the situation there.
"This could be solved through dialogue and initially agreeing on rules governing their relationship between Iran and the Gulf states on the basis of noninterference and internal affairs."
On Monday, Al-Thani addressed the UN General Assembly to discuss the major issues facing the Middle East and Qatar’s commitment to address them.
"The disputes, in my opinion, are political, regional, Arab-Iranian differences rather than being a Sunni-Shiite dispute."
The Qatari Emir also said he wants to see a new political regime in Syria that will replace the government of President Bashar Assad.
"From here, I would like to call for cooperation in order to impose a political solution in Syria that would end the reign of tyranny, and replace it with a pluralistic regime based on equal citizenship of all Syrians, defeat radicalism and terrorism and insolate Syria from them, repatriate the displaced from their homes and allow the reconstruction of Syria."
