UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — The right of veto has always been used in the UN Security Council, and it was not assumed that there would always be consensus when the organization was founded, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday.
"I want to underline that there have always been disagreements in the UN throughout the 70 years of the existence of the organization, and the right of veto was always used. The United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, the Soviet Union and later Russia have all used it. It is perfectly natural for such a diverse representative organization," Putin said at the UN General Assembly.
Russia is ready to work with all partners based on broad consensus to develop the United Nations:
"Of course, the world is changing, and the UN must satisfy this natural transformation. Russia, on the basis of broad consensus, is ready for this work — further development of the UN with all partners."
The 70th jubilee session of the UN General Assembly officially kicked off at the UN Headquarters on September 15. The Assembly's annual general debate involving heads of state and government opened earlier on Monday, September 28.
