Japan Urges US, Russia to Reduce Nuclear Arsenal
22:23 GMT 29.09.2015 (Updated: 10:30 GMT 06.08.2022) Japan will continue to urge the United States and Russia, as well as other nuclear armed countries to reduce the number of nuclear weapons, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said during his remarks at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday.
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — He vowed to prepare a draft resolution to promote "united action by the international community" to eliminate the world’s nuclear arsenal. Abe expressed confidence the resolution would receive significant support.
"Nuclear weapon reduction should proceed continually between the United States and Russia, but Japan will continue to assert vehemently that other states possessing nuclear weapons should also move forward in reducing their arsenals."

He warned that 70 years after the United States used atomic weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, "there appears to be an ongoing increase in nuclear arsenals without transparency."
The UN’s 2015 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference, Abe noted, "failed" to establish any guidelines on future steps toward nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
The NPT Treaty has been ratified by 191 states, including Japan, Russia and the United States, and entered into force in 1970.
