'Russia Needs Security in the Whole of the Middle East, Not Just in Syria'
MOSCOW (Sputnik) Europeans are beginning to understand that regional security can only be attained with, not against, Russia, a senior left-wing German parliament member said Wednesday.

"Security in Europe can only be achieved with Russia, not against Russia. More and more ordinary people and politicians in Europe understand this," Sevim Dagdelen said in a Moscow-Berlin video conference organized by the Rossiya Segodnya news agency.

The Left Party and Bundestag’s Committee on Foreign Affairs member contended that settling the Ukrainian crisis also requires the cooperation of Russia.

"Look at what [Ukrainian President Petro] Poroshenko’s quasi-government is doing. Look at what the Right Sector [right-wing Ukrainian radical group]. They are real fascists," Dagdelen stated.

She said a growing number of Germans, as well as Ukrainians, have begun to acknowledge the dangers of Poroshenko’s policies, including his government's tacit approval of extremist organizations like the Right Sector.

Kiev suspended food supplies to Crimea on September 20, with the Right Sector's support.

The German lawmaker reiterated a number of European policymakers’ calls for the lifting of anti-Russia sanctions.

"The policy of sanctions affects many businesses. In my state of North Rhine-Westphalia alone, the sanctions have jeopardized thousands of jobs," Dagdelen observed.

Disputed versions over the cause of the Ukrainian conflict prompted Brussels to follow a lead by the United States to adopt, as well as expand, a series of restrictive measures against Russia. European research has demonstrated that several EU member states are suffering direct and indirect losses amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars from sanctions intended to punish Moscow.
