MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Italian Parliamentarians believe they must strengthen cooperation with Russia to counter the Islamic State (ISIL) extremist group in order to stabilize Libya and Syria, Italian lawmaker Simone Baldelli said Wednesday.
“We agreed that it is necessary to reinforce our cooperation [with Russia] in the fight against a so-called Islamic State, particularly regarding the situation in Libya and Syria in order to stabilize the situation in these regions, which, among other things, are the main source of mass migration that we are witnessing in the European Union,” Baldelli told reporters.
Baldelli said that the fight against terrorism is being discussed at the UN General Assembly.
Earlier on Wednesday, the upper house of Russia’s parliament unanimously approved the use of the country's air force in Syria after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad made a request to Moscow for military assistance. On the same day, Russian jets conducted its first airstrikes against extremist positions in Syria.
