MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Reports emerged last week of US plans to station 20 modified B61-12 guided nuclear bombs, four times the explosive power of the Hiroshima atomic bomb, at the Buchel Air Base in western Germany.
A YouGov survey of nearly 1,200 people conducted over five days found that 64 percent of respondents opposed the US nuclear weapons being located in Germany, and another 63 percent said it constituted a "clear provocation" against Russia.
In a previous poll by the research firm conducted last May, 66 percent of those surveyed were in favor of withdrawing US nuclear weapons from German soil.
Russia has voiced its concerns that the stationing of new nuclear weapons in Germany would violate the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT). US military officials have refuted the claim, while Germany contends that the United States is not expanding its nuclear capabilities but replacing old components of existing weapons.
