NEW YOR (Sputnik) — He added that a special bi-national commission will take up the issue at some point in the course of diplomatic talks between the two countries.
"I don’t have anything specific on a timeline related to that specific Cuban request," Palmieri said.
On Tuesday, Cuban President Raul Castro told US Prescient Barack Obama during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York that Guantanamo Bay should be returned to Cuba, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriquez Parilla said at the UN.
Castro also insisted that the US trade embargo on Cuba should be lifted in order for the two countries to fully normalize relations.
In December 2014, President Obama announced the United States would pursue a path toward normalizing relations with Cuba. In July, two countries reopened embassies in their respective capitals after more than 50 years of hostility.
Despite the progress made, the United States continues to keep the congressionally-mandated trade embargo on Havana.
