Police in Japan's Fukushima Prefecture have submitted to the prosecutor’s office documents to launch a criminal case against 32 managers of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) over a leak of contaminated water from the power plant into the sea, local media reported Friday.

TOKYO (Sputnik) — Police have reviewed claims filed by the local residents after 300-tons of highly radioactive water leaked from TEPCO tanks, where it had been stored after the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, according to the Japanese NHK broadcaster.

As of March, TEPCO tanks contained about 600,000 tons of contaminated water, collected after nuclear reactors were cooled following the disaster.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster was triggered in March 2011 by a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The accident is considered to be the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

According to preliminary estimates, the cleanup, including the dismantling of the plant's reactors, is projected to take up to 40 years.
