BERLIN (Sputnik) — Germany's Federal Foreign Office welcomed Friday possible coordination between Russia and the United States on their actions in Syria.
"We can only welcome steps that may lead to a de-escalation of the situation," Foreign Office spokeswoman Sawsan Chebli told reporters.
On Wednesday, Russia launched airstrikes on Islamic State targets in Syria, following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.
According to the Kremlin, Russia intends to use only the country's air force in its operations against ISIL militants in Syria and will not deploy ground troops.
According to the US embassy in Moscow, the Russian president and his US counterpart have common interests in the fight against terrorism, including ISIL in Syria. The two presidents have opened a communication channel between the countries military forces to avoid misunderstandings during operations in the region.
