WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Washington intends to await the results of the investigation into the shelling of a Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres, or MSF) hospital in the Afghan city of Kunduz, before drawing final conclusions about the circumstances of the tragedy, President Barack Obama said in a statement.
"The Department of Defense has launched a full investigation, and we will await the results of that inquiry before making a definitive judgment as to the circumstances of this tragedy," the statement reads.
"I have asked the Department of Defense to keep me apprised of the investigation and expect a full accounting of the facts and circumstances," the US president added.
Obama also extended his condolences to the medical professionals and other civilians killed and injured in the tragic incident.
According to the MSF, the hospital was hit by a series of aerial bombing raids from 02:08 a.m. until 03:15 a.m. local time on Saturday (after 22:00 GMT Friday).
NATO said in a statement that US forces conducted an airstrike in Kunduz at around the same time — just after 02:00 a.m. local time on Saturday.
Washington and Kabul have launched a joint investigation into the incident.
