WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Mistakes and abuse often take place when euthanasia drugs are administered to patients who want to die quickly, advocacy group Not Dead Yet New England Regional Director John Kelly told Sputnik.
"[A] consensus has been emerging against the death penalty [because] innocent people get executed because of mistakes… so we must reject assisted suicide because… innocent people will lose their lives under this program," Kelly said on Tuesday.
"He [Brown] uses the classic public relations strategy of pumping up fear in order to offer ‘comfort’," Kelly claimed.
The activist argued that Brown’s reasoning for why euthanasia should be legalized in California resembled a television commercial.
"Brown creates a false hypothetical of ‘prolonged and excruciating pain’ to promise the comfort of sweet death through a state-sponsored program of prescribed poisoning," Kelly stated.
In September, the California Senate passed the End of Life Options Act allowing terminally ill patients with half a year or less to live as estimated by two different doctors to end their own lives under a physician’s supervision.
About two dozen US states introduced euthanasia legislation in 2015, but none of the bills have so far become law.
