MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) – The death toll from a major landslide in Guatemala’s Santa Catarina Pinula municipality stands at over 200 people, the country’s authorities said.
According to the latest information released by Guatemala’s public ministry via Twitter on Wednesday evening, the country's prosecutors say 220 people have died in the accident.
Earlier on Wednesday, the ministry said that 175 bodies had been recovered from the site of the accident, while 300 remained missing.
On Monday, two smaller landslides occurred in the same area and the water level in a nearby river rose by over 3 feet, raising fears of more potential damage.
Hundreds of rescue workers have been sent to the site to search for victims. Over 70 units of equipment, including mechanical diggers, are being used in the search.
