WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy decided not to run for speaker position in the lower chamber of the US Congress, Congressman Ryan Costello told reporters on Thursday.
"McCarthy went up to the microphone and said that he was withdrawing his name from consideration for speaker," Costello said.
McCarthy’s decision postpones elections for the US House speaker.
Over the past year, Boehner has come under attack by members of his own Republican party, who have continuously urged him to resign.
On Monday, Boehner said House leadership elections would take place on October 29. Prior to the final vote, the members of the House Republican Conference were expected to elect a nominee for the speaker’s position.
Following the final vote at the end of October, which may be rescheduled over McCarthy’s decision, the elected speaker will establish the date for the leadership team elections.
