MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Seehofer did not elaborate how he would enable such restrictive policies as the border with Austria is guarded by the German Federal Police which is controlled by Berlin.
"We should take emergency measures to limit immigration, for example, turning them back at the border with Austria and sending asylum seekers immediately on into other states of Germany," Seehofer told the Bild newspaper.
Germany is the primary destination for a majority of economic migrants arriving in Europe from less affluent Balkan countries, as well as refugees from Syria and other conflict-torn regions of the Middle East and North Africa.
The country has granted asylum to some 600,000 refugees since the start of the year, with an estimated 10,000 refugees crossing into the country every day, according to the Foreign Ministry.
