The United States disregards responsibilities under the international law when it deports illegal immigrants back to their native countries, US advocacy group Center for Human Rights and Constitutional Law President Peter Schey told Sputnik.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — In November 2014, US President Barack Obama issued an Executive Order to protect up to five million undocumented immigrants from deportation and grant them the right to obtain US work permits.

"The Obama administration treats the majority of these refugees as so-called 'illegal aliens,' disregarding its obligation to provide them well-established protections under international law," Schey said on Tuesday.

On Monday, an investigation by The Guardian revealed that the US government is deporting undocumented immigrants back to Central America where many face immediate threats of violence and death, and some have been killed shortly after their return

"In response to the refugee crisis in Europe, Secretary of State John Kerry has said that the United States is 'a land of second chances and a beacon of hope,’" Schey said. "But when it comes to refugees arriving in the US fleeing violence in Central America, the United States is often a land of no chances and no hope."

Schey went on that the United States is responsible for the current deaths that many of the deported illegal immigrants have experienced.

"When they are illegally deported to their home countries and suffer further violence and sometimes death, their blood is on the hands of the US Government."

On Tuesday, a US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson told Sputnik that the United States will not give refuge to undocumented immigrants seeking protection from crime-related violence. However, the DHS official noted that foreign immigrants could still apply for asylum during their deportation proceedings.
